ब्रिटिश काल में हुए इस घटना ने पूरे India-British administration को हिला दिया था।
दरअसल, Sher Ali Afridi ने Lord Mayo (the Viceroy of British India) की हत्या Mount Harriet National Park लौटते समय Hopetown Jetty पर कर दी थी, जो Mount Harriet के बिल्कुल पास स्थित है।
Sher Ali Afridi पहले से ही एक prisoner था और उसे वहीं labour duty पर तैनात किया गया था। इसी दौरान उसने अपने प्लान को execute किया और Lord Mayo की हत्या कर दी। Lord Mayo की हत्या के तुरंत बाद Sher Ali Afridi को गिरफ्तार किया गया और कोर्ट ने उसे death sentence सुनाया।
इसके बाद उसे Viper Island के प्रसिद्ध gallows में फाँसी दी गई। आज भी यह historic gallows Viper Island पर मौजूद हैं और यहाँ आने वाले tourists इस जगह को देखना नहीं भूलते। यह spot Andaman के colonial history का एक महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा कहा जाता है।
